Welcome

Welcome to the first blog about the Driscoll Public Library. "Between The Covers" was chosen for a name since our library supplies information, entertainment for our patrons Between The Covers of a book.

For those of you who may not be familiar with the Driscoll PL, we are located in Devine, TX, a small community located approximately 30 miles south of San Antonio. Devine's population is under 5,000. Our largest employer is Devine Independent School District while other Devinites work in agriculture or commute daily to Hondo or San Antonio. Our community supports many churches; two banks; two hardware stores; medical, dental, and veternary clinics; a grocery store; and several fast food chains as well as many locally owned businesses and restaurants. In a town with four car washes, you would think every car in town would be immaculate but "Wash Me" signs are still visible.

Our public library began as a grassroots effort. The women of the community recognized the need to share knowledge as well as entertainment. The library moved from their cramped quarters in what is now the Little League concession stand to the old Driscoll Lumber Company in 1968. The Driscoll family generously donated the building for a library and community center and the Bicentenial Committee raised the money to renovate the empty lumber yard.
